The Yalla Shams initiative is the first initiative in which civil society forces participate actively in the face of the energy challenges facing Egypt. It is being funded by the Ministry of Environment and the Energy Rationalization Unit (Centre of Statistics and Decision Making). The first phase of the initiative, which aims to cover 15% of the energy needs of the country, is a call for individuals, the public sector and multinationals to use solar energy as a total or partial alternative to traditional energy sources to meet their needs. The British University in Egypt is the main partner of the campaign.
The government is cooperating by offering facilities, such as the creation of a comprehensive system to ensure the implementation of solar projects and their connection to the power grid. It is also introducing fiscal measures to guarantee income to producers and technical and commercial guarantees for consumers.
